Kasima Smith grew up in human foster care, without any knowledge of her birth family or her origins. Then her monster emerges in a moment of extreme peril and her life is changed forever. Now a student at the Blackthorn Academy, she’s tasked with keeping her head down and learning how to somehow control the monster inside.

To make matters worse, she's forbidden from using her newly discovered shadow skills because as it turns out, she's the only monster of her kind left in the world and will be hunted if she's discovered alive. Then, she realizes fellow student, Jahrdran Vilnik, is hunting her. Whether it's because he wishes to claim her as his mate or is hunting her to kill her is anyone's guess.
